Caring for Your Permanent Makeup as You Age

December 01, 20242 min read

Despite the name, modern permanent makeup is designed to fade. When performed correctly, it is implanted into the upper layers of the dermis, allowing the pigment to gradually lighten over one to three years. This is actually a feature, not a flaw.

As we age, our faces change. Our skin tone shifts, our features settle differently, and our hair color may transition. If the bold, dark eyebrows that suited you at thirty-five remained exactly the same at fifty-five, they would look harsh and incongruous. The gradual fading of permanent makeup allows us to continuously refine the shape, soften the color, and adapt the design to flatter your evolving face.

How quickly your permanent makeup fades depends heavily on your lifestyle and your skincare routine. The single greatest enemy of pigment is the sun. UV rays break down the pigment molecules, causing premature fading and sometimes altering the color. A high-quality, daily SPF is the most important aftercare step you can take.

Secondly, examine your skincare ingredients. Active ingredients designed to accelerate cellular turnover—such as retinols, retinoids, glycolic acid, and other AHAs/BHAs—will also accelerate the fading of your permanent makeup. Keep these powerful anti-aging products well away from your tattooed brows or lips.

When is it time for a refresh? You will know it is time when the shape begins to lose its crispness or the color has faded to the point where you feel the need to reach for a pencil or lipstick again. It is always better to wait until the pigment has significantly faded before adding more. Layering fresh pigment over heavily saturated old pigment leads to a dense, unnatural look.

This is why initial color selection is so vital. A poorly chosen color will fade into undesirable tones (grey, blue, or pink) which are much harder to correct later. A master artist uses color theory to select pigments that will remain true to tone even as they lighten, ensuring you look beautiful at every stage of the fading process.
